Christine: —throughout the country and world actually, so we wish him the best but 92 and gravely ill. Dieter Powells is our life coach and here we are.
Dieter: How are you?
Christine: I'm fine. We’re putting together a puzzle. We’ve covered the importance of posture, being present in your own life and striving for competency and today, we’re talking about?
Dieter: Attitude.
Christine: Attitude.
Dieter: Attitude, for me attitude is like a frame of mind, it’s the way you view yourself, the way you view other people, the way you view your life’s experiences. So sometimes they say that if you change the way you look at the world, the world you look at will change and it all starts with your attitude.
Christine: Well that’s an interesting way to put it. If you look at the way—say that again please.
Dieter: If you change the way you look at the world, the world you look at will change. If you change the frame through which you see things, it will show differently to you. Does that make sense?
Christine: Yeah it does and attitude—really what you're saying is about making the mental adjustments in your mind really to enrich your life.
Dieter: Absolutely, yeah.
Christine: And we’re going to take a look at a clip right now that you particularly like from Forest Gump.
Dieter: Yeah.
Christine: Okay, let’s take a look at that now.
Christine: There you go and I think there's a period in your life where I think the light bulb goes off and you do figure out that you have to figure it out yourself, right Dieter?
Dieter: I guess she was talking about Belgian chocolates.
Christine: I'm sure.
Dieter: There are certain things in your life that you cannot control, we don’t get to choose, like the economy, you have the economy and so forth, yet we have to focus on the stub that you do control, your attitude is one of the most important things.
Christine: So is it much easier when you always remind yourself that you can control the way you react?
Dieter: Yes, the way you respond.
Christine: A respond, yes.
Dieter: The way we respond. So there are a couple of things that we can talk about today on how to really adjust your attitude, your mental state of mind.
Christine: But there are some people that are just negative and kind of pessimistic, but what are some of the things you can do, you mentioned surround yourself with positive people?
Dieter: Absolutely. You want to surround yourself with people who believe in you but also speak their own truth, not people who just tell you what you want to hear, you know, who are very objective and would support you in your goals. And sometimes it means to disassociate when people—who are not supporting you and sometimes that’s difficult because not all the times those people are very close to you.
Christine: And use positive language.
Dieter: Positive language, think about the times we say, I should or I must or I have to. In these kind of words, there is no possibility.
Christine: It’s not I will.
Dieter: That’s right, if you use the word for example I choose or I want to, certainly you’d create more possibility. The other language is a language of necessity where there is no choice left in the matter. So if you say for example always or never, there is no choice in the matter. So next time you got yourself saying the word “I have to” or “I must”, change it by saying “I choose” or “I want to” and notice a difference in your body and how people respond to you.
Christine: Okay, what about on the next one?
Dieter: The next one is, I mean look at the screen, take action.
Christine: Invest in yourself actually.
Dieter: Invest in yourself, yes I mean if you just take 50 minutes a day to put some positive thoughts in your mind, whether you read a blog or you read a book or you listen to the audio CD and especially in these times, go to workshops, invest in yourselves, go to seminars and learn something new about yourself, because it all starts by knowing and understanding yourself.
Christine: A lot of times, people are busy taking care of other people and they neglect to take care of themselves and invest in themselves to make themselves feel better about themselves.
Dieter: Absolutely.
Christine: And so I mean some of the things are simple stuffs, right and you have to take action or none of us is worth it.
Dieter: No, without action, nothing is going to be done right now.
Christine: So that’s probably the part that’s very difficult, how to take action and I guess one of the things that you’ve said before is that everyday you kind of say, is this getting me toward the goal that I want, to have a better attitude in life. You know, to ask yourself that question.
Dieter: Ultimately it comes down to taking ownership of your life, to create a certain level of maturity and why you take ownership of your life, that’s a privilege and a freedom that not everybody can enjoy and we do that and you start with your attitude and that’s a choice you can make each and everyday.
Christine: Any responsibility to yourself and to those around you?
Dieter: Absolutely, yeah.
Christine: Are you really—have you always been a very positive person?
Dieter: Well, I'm very aware of my attitudes and that helps, you know. Attitude is not even going to solve all my problems but sometimes they say that if you have a positive attitude, it will annoy enough people, it’s worth the time.
Christine: Or one people say how are you and you can really start to answer.
Dieter: Yeah.
Christine: And it’s the negative they don’t want to hear.
Dieter: No, absolutely. That’s why attitude is a very strong attraction because if you are very positive, you will attract positive experiences and positive people into your life.
Christine: Okay, what will we conquer next week?
Dieter: The power of intention.
Christine: The power of intention. We intend to do that next week.
Dieter: Yes, I will see you next week.
Christine: Thank you Dieter Powells, our life coach.
Dieter: Have a nice weekend.
