David: Hi I am Davie Epstein, this is Growing Wisdom and today we are going to spy on my neighbor who is working behind to me and we are going to go there and talk with her a little bit. Lisa is building her own stone container garden right in front of her yard, pretty cool.
So I am here with Lisa and Lisa, this is pretty cool, I have been watching you do this for past couple of weeks and tell me little bit about what you are doing here?
Lisa: This was my response to dear snow plows and road salt. I felt I needed something to still have color to still have something going on here but I would not be heart broken every year.
The basic core of this are those cement blocks behind you and a pressure treated rocks frame. I have a window box to drop down in here and I can plant that then with whatever I feel like. In the wintertime, I can cover this straight across and then put up something nonliving like firewood or some ornamentations.
David: The cement is just standard?
Lisa: This is a mortar mix. It is less than $4, a 60 pound bag, you mix it up to a certain texture and you find what texture works the best and that will hold. I dry fit the pieces first and then I go back and do it although you always have to be prepared for the fact that what worked dry fit does not always seem to work once you get the mortar up there. Hence I have quite a selection around me if I have to move quickly and find another piece to fit it between.
David: Where did you get the stones?
Lisa: A very kind person who was excavating let me have as many as my heart’s content.
David: So you sort of drove around and found just somebody that was digging basically and got some great stones. How much time are you going to end up spending on something like this?
Lisa: Easily five solid days I would think but one of the advantages of working with stones is stone does not go bad. You can just leave it and come back to it.
David: It is really a great summer project. It is just something like you said you get a couple of hours. You can come out, you can do it.
Lisa: It is very pleasurable and my goal is to be able to put in the fall mums.
David: We look forward to that thank you very much. Come back every week and see what we have got cooking for you here at GrowingWisdom.com
