Do you have a window that lacks definition like this one did? We created a lovely window bench here in half a day and for less than $100. We took a unusable space and turned it into a great little window seat with some architectural details.
We are creating a nice bench that has storage and that it's going to be very square, very straight, and very sleeking design. Now, if you wanted to change things a little bit, you could actually build a window seat, that is just a platform. So we can put things under it, but that's a little messy, and that's not the way we're going to go into this room.
I am going to recycle all the baseboard and shoe molding and put it on the front of our new window bench. What that's going to do is make it look like it was installed at same time in the same era.
So when it comes to the frame, we are going to build it out of this nice light 4x1 poplar. It's very easy, and very cheap. That's 30 minutes, frames in. You're going to love this.
We chose birch plywood for the face and the seat of our window bench, because it's one of the strongest and most stable plywoods available. So this is the easy part. I am marking out the birch plywood that's going to be cutout and it's going to be the top and the face of that seat.
Most people don't believe this, that a normal chair is 17 inches high. One of the considerations when designing this window seat was the actual height of the window. So I raised the window seat up to 23 inches, that's a nice platform. So that when you are actually sitting on it, you can see it out and have the natural life.
So we have a finger hole here, so you can pick it up, just in case you want to store some stuff in there. So this seat is great storage.
Now with a window seat like this, you could go for two options, you could paint it the same color as the walls and it would blend into that beautiful purple color, or you could paint it white. So it stands out and it looks like a detail, we chose white, we think it's going to be really a cool offset against that purple. Gives a great definition.
This is the dressing up of it, little bit of molding, just adds great detail, cnd check this out. Look at the original baseboard. Who would have thought that when you recycle that, because this seat, it looks like it was always there.
Now, I bought this from the hardware. It's a little detail. There are a couple of bucks, and I think this is a real treat. Adding something simple like this is a great easy way to dress up a plain box. There we go, the final piece.
Now, with simple construction we turned an area that is somewhere relaxing and inviting. I think you've got to say that we've changed this room dramatically, and all of this for $86 and less than half a day. Not bad.
