Female Speaker: Building a custom workbench can spruce up your garage and give you a great place to store your tool. Here are a few things you should know, if you would like to build a workbench for your garage.
First you will need pick your lumber. We are using poplar for the doors, and a composite material called the melamine for the shelf. Cut your lumber to size and start building the shelf or car kit. For simple but sturdy joint use a dado blade to cut a groove into each panel, then fit the pieces together, fastening them with finish nails and wood glue. A framing square helps ensure all the pieces are straight and square.
The face frame is next. Using a hardwood like poplar will add strength to your cabinet and prevent twisting or warping over time. Drill holes for pocket screws with a clamping jig and assemble the frame.
For drawers consider using a pre-finished hardwood.
Amy Mathews: So what we are using here to make the frame for the door is actually a pre-finished maple, and it's great because it's factory-finished, you don't have to do that when you get it home, so that's going to save your time. It costs a little over a dollar a foot, depending on the size that you get and it also has a dado cut in it to accept the drawer bottom. Assemble the sides then slide in your bottom panel.
Alright, well we have got the drawers done, now it's time for the doors.
Female Speaker: A flat panel door is a simple and stylish way to finish a workbench.
Amy Mathews: So what Tyler is working on here is he is using a dado blade on a table saw and he is using it to cut this tannin, and this tannin will fit into the dado cut on the side-piece. So our top rail, our side style, fits it together like that and we've got half of our door.
Female Speaker: Assemble the side pieces, then insert the middle panel and finish. A clamp holds everything together while the glue dries.
Amy Mathews: It's definitely a good idea to shim the side of the board, so the clamp doesn't make a mark in your new beautiful door.
Female Speaker: The only thing left do to is paint and assemble the final pieces. When you are done, you will have a great addition to your garage.
