Speaker: Jean and her son Matthew are in back to school mode, so is teacher Alison Fardy.
Alison Fardy: I always buy extra school supplies for the beginning of the year because some kids walk in with nothing and they need more than that to succeed.
Speaker: Alison isn't unique. Angus Reid survey commissioned by Staples shows more than a third of Canadian students will start the school year without even the most basic school supplies.
Dave Porteous: The survey polled more than 2,000 teachers across the country. One in five stated that half their students will begin their year without the supplies that they need. So, the teachers themselves will jump in to fill that spending gap.
Speaker: Certain school boards provide some supplies but because of financial pressures facing boards, families pay for most of the supplies.
Alison Fardy: If money is tight and a child can't get supplies they need. It makes learning very difficult. I think educators everywhere agree, we want our students to learn and to succeed, and that's why we go out and we spend our money and buy the supplies for them.
Dave Porteous: We believe that there is a real opportunity here for Staples to help out. Once again this year, we are encouraging people to purchase school supplies at their Staples Store, where they will be donated to local schools and charities. Last year we were able to donate more than $300,000 of school supplies all across the country.
Speaker: Each store selects a local charity or school, and makes sure they receive all donations collected. This ensures all donations stay in the local community. To find out more stuff by your local Staples Business Depot Store or visit www.easy.staples.ca. Martin Render would reporting.
