Vanessa Valera: I truly believe on that expression that says; that a diamond is forever. Hi. This is Vanessa Valera with watchmopo.com and today we’re going to be talking to jewelry expert, Moneca Kaufmann who’s going to talk to us about the famous four Cs; clarity, cut, color and carat, most important of course, being the carat; the bigger the better.
Moneca Kaufmann: I would say, the most important C to consider first is the cut. The cut refers to the various proportions of the stone one in relation to the other. Most sales people in jewelry stores never spoke much about cut because it wasn’t much talked about with the American Gem Society nor the Gemological Institute in America. Today is becoming more amore prevalent where they have actually organized a cut grade on the report.
The cut of the stone—I mean you’re not paying a huge premium, maybe five, ten percent more but if you have an excellent cut which is the top grade or a very good cut which is the second to the top, you’re going to have a stone that’s brilliant, that sparkles, that really does what it’s suppose to do. So I would say the number one factor to go for is cut.
I was certain to say the second one is the color. I’d like a white stone personally. So you’re going to pay a pretty good premium to go with the top colors being D, E and F. Now colors range from D to Z in the normal color range. D to about G, H are white stones after which you have yellow in the stone and that’s caused by nitrogen effect. So I would definitely stick with something that’s white. I would say from a value stand point, you can get a great stoner with a beautiful white G H color, obviously y D, E, F are better but the difference is there are so unusual that you won’t be able to really tell. So, second factor for me would be color.
Third, you know I guess it would be clarity. You know the clarity, I wouldn’t want to below SI1 on a stone. It start at flawless and then it goes to I, I3 in fact. I is very included, you certainly wouldn’t want to own a n I stone for your finger because it could actually just break, in other words, there are cleavage points that it could just break the stone in its wear. So, I would tend to stick with SI1 which is slightly included and better, you’ll get a very good value if you have SI1.
Vanessa Valera: Nowadays, I mean the people really like big stones, I mean know I do.
Moneca Kaufmann: Yeah.
Vanessa Valera: But everybody has different taste and if example, you know my mother, she prefers a smaller stone because she thinks it’s more discreet and more elegant.
Moneca Kaufmann: Yeah.
Vanessa Valera: However, we’ll have you know different opinions and different taste when it comes to diamonds and everything else.
Moneca Kaufmann: Sure.
Vanessa Valera: What will you say now this is the biggest trend when it comes to the size of the diamond and the cut as well?
\
Moneca Kaufmann: I would say that ladies tend to like bigger if they can get it bigger, it’s all the question of your budget. As far as the cut or in another word, the shape of the stone goes, I would say rounds are still the most desirable or the most sought after because it’s a traditional classic look and it’s usually the one that is first chosen as an engagement ring but of course over the years as anniversaries get celebrated. Ladies will often tend to upgrade and that’s something we obviously offer the our customers, the ability to upgrade their stone as they go through the years and a lot of people go for radiant cut today, princess, radiance are very beloved stones. They have a lot of life to them and they sparkle and they offer something different in the traditional ramp.
