How to Care for Down Pillows

Audra: Your house gets well if you want to display your manner as possible but I bet poofing the cushions and pillows never crossed your mind. Well that is lifestyle expert Mar Jennings says that “whether you’re in your own home or someone else’s its always nice to poof after yourself” that’s what he said. Mar: I’ll tell you more about it. Audra: Help me out Mar. Mar: Okay let me explain it. More homes today have down pillows we’re seeing it become more and more popular in the home. And whether it’s a seat cushion or whether it’s a pillow, as a homeowner there’s some maintenance that’s required with it. And to have it looks so luxurious and full you want to make sure that you’re poofing your pillows. Now what are the directions for poofing your pillows? You want to make that its inviting and when it’s completely poof it means that it’s ready for someone to sit there. Audra: Okay. Mar: So this is a perfect example. Now when it comes to the pillows there’s a variety of all pouring stores that offer down pillows that are really well priced you don’t have to spend a lot of money. So knowing that and knowing how to find those are really great to really introduce pillows because it can change your complete living space or den area but just adding accessory. Audra: And some of the pillow—what are the pillows you have on the table here is over a hundred dollars or over 20 bucks, right? Mar: That’s correct, that’s right. And you can’t tell the difference. But to find the best quality you want to always find it and shake it and really feel it. When you’re shopping, you want to make sure that it has a full volume and that you can actually put what they call a karate chop through it and it takes a karate chop it doesn’t bounce back. If it bounces back it’s probably has no foam in it. So you want to make sure that it gives and it takes a great karate chop. Audra: I would be the crazy lady in the—lets going. Mar: That’s right. And when it does that’s really a wonderful way to know that’s a quality pillow. Audra: Okay. Mar: And poofing after yourself is all about that. When you go to someone’s one and they do have a down pillow and you get up and you’re not coming back it is perfectly correct and okay for you to take the pillow and poof it and should never take and remove a seat cushion because they all think you’re looking for money. So the idea is just you know do the best you can when it comes to the seat cushion. Alright, but when it comes to the pillow, go right ahead. I found out when I go to people’s homes and I noticed that and I poof after my self, people always say “wow, thank you” because the host generally has to do it anyway. Audra: See that’s where—because a lot of people always want especially I’ve been going to hotels if they’re straight. Mar: Yeah, you don’t want it flat. It’s not as attractive when it’s a flat pillow. Okay, but when you complete it and you put that karate chop which really started in the 80’s it became extremely popular in all the design magazines. So that to me is a signature of style and that is finished and it’s ready to receive a guest. Audra: So this came about at the 80’s but you gave it the signature—the karate chop, right? Mar: The karate chop was introduced in the 80’s poofing was something that I was doing my entire life. My mother was slightly heavy below so wherever she sat it was my job to go when she was done and poof that pillow. Audra: Really? Mar: Okay, so I poof just about everything including foam I tried it, everything. The idea is that you want to have it completely full more like a marshmallow vs a—okay. You want to have that complete luster and that’s what really inviting when you seat in a down pillow which is very easy to clean. You want to have it laundered not dry clean or if you want to do it yourself you need to take it to an industrial manufactured type of laundry mat that has front loading. It allows you the opportunity to do it yourself but it’s going to take three hours to dry. Audra: A lot quicker to do this. Mar: Yep, a lot quicker. Audra: Thank you very much Mar. Mar: My pleasure.
