For this week, I thought I will try to find one plant that would take care of a number of problems. And I think I did with this one. It is called Grevillea Noell.
It is actually it grow quit rapid in Australia and it is a quit a neat plant because what it do is that not only, is it deer retardant, it drought hardy it is evergreen and it has this great little flowers.
Now, the nice thing about this plant is one is that, it is evergreen. It takes full sun, look great and it starts flowering with this very unique little flowers early in spring and it will go straight through until early summer.
You will probably see them start to fade or probably about half way through May, it will start to go down.
It is also neat in a sense that if you an area like I do, were deer is a real problem, this Grevilleas work great because one is they do not taste very well; I am told. And two is they have little prickles on the end. So, if you got deer like I do, whenever I plant a new plant, that came in and they nibble a little bit and then they go away.
It will deter them because what it will do it will prickle thee noise just a little bit so they do not totally destroy the plant.
The other neat thing is it is very drought hard. Now remember, with any drought plant, they still need to be established for that first year. So when you are planting them, dig a hole at least twice the size of the original size and twice the size deep. Put it in there and give it one full year of great water and care. After that, these plants are near indestructible.
As a matter of fact, the propagators tell me that you should not actually water them until the first 3 inches Is actually dry. So you can see, it can take a lot of abuse.
So we have got a beautiful evergreen plant, a unique flower, drought hardy deer resistant, I think we got a winner with this one.
