Well, it is a warm winter’s day here in raspberry Massachusetts and where am I but, outside working in my winter garden.
You know, having raised beds makes it really easy to extend your growing season into the winter if not throughout the whole winter.
I have here some parsley and oregano that has been growing in my garden since the summer and I have done that by creating a micro climate.
We are able to extend our growing season here in the northeast because we have long enough day time hours. A problem is that the temperature is too cold.
So, what we are doing here is recreating a microclimate and we are raising the temperature around our plants. I want to bring that temperature to at least 35° F so that it is not going to freeze up to a rather day time temperature of around 55°F.
Now, I have done that by using these bubbles I called them. They are actually plastic skylights. I ordered a large number of skylights a little while back and a couple of them came broken and what I did was I modified those and made and made them into a little mini green house.
You can also use plastic right here to create a little hoop house or a tunnel to create your micro climate.
Now, the other things you need in order to have a successful winter garden are the right plants. In our winter garden, we can actually grow a large variety of vegetables. We can grow a large variety of lettuces, Swiss chard, carrots, herbs like parsley and oregano obviously, and we are going to start some seeds in here right now.
I am Patti Moreno the Garden Girl, thanks for watching.
