How to Carve a Wooden Spoon
Hi guys, it Sean from Silver Fox Bushcraft. Matt for a night it was reasonably we’re going to make lay wooden spoons. I’ve seen lots of videos on YouTube on people cutting wooden spoons and the way I cut mine I think it’s a better way and it’s different towards in the YouTube. So I demonstrate how I make my spoons.
Right basically, we got piece of branch here and what I like to do is I split down in the middle so you split in half. You open up. I just got one half and then the other half and do the cut, two stiff cuts in the bottom and then split. Then the other side and then that’s the blank to curve it now. As you can see there is a lot wood carve out.
Now, the problem with this is you start with it little down. It takes you a while and then you start carving just the ball out. Now most crooked knives are right handed and most people are right handed so they start carving spoon this way. When they want to carve the spoon out this way around they can't do it left handed. So what you see in charge is hold bowl on the end of it and start trying to carve like so and a lot people find that really difficult to do.
So when I met my spoons what I do I get my piece of wood. I rub it and start splitting in the center. I must split off to one edge and we really can't see on this grind now and find which one had split off. When I choose the grain I choose the straightest part of the grains as well. So on this look this is the center, the grain up this side is very clear to break those together. The grain down the bottom is almost straight across. So I split my wood roughly one-third with two one third and two-thirds and one third is what I'm keeping.
So I split the wood. Do the same as the other stick and the other knife. Put my step cuts it in and I cut up the end. I'm about do that on both ends of the loop. So now I've got is a much straightest stick to carve. My posts are going to be in the middle as you can see. But I've got hand on each ends, so when people comes to carve the spoons out and they carve one way they can then turn it round and they can carve the other way. They’ve got hand on both ends and when you get your spoon carved out then you're ready to start finishing off. You just cut of the extra handle whichever you need to start to take and that spoon.
A spoon like that you can probably make up in 20 minutes or more. I cut that out because you can see it’s a very thin piece of wood to carve out. Also you’ve got that much better spoon. I need to get my spoon. So here's my spoon and I must set any carve spoons when I need to. There is the blank. It’s almost identical actually in size. That was just a lucky guess. In fact that’s the nearest I've done this, exactly the same size as both.
But what you get is very flat shallow spoon and you see some people when they carve the spoon and they’ve got a spoon like this and you get almost like a ladle and you can't get a thing in your mouth whereas that a very thin and it’s very convenient to eat and you can use that a proper spoon. So we’ll continue carving the spoon out now and we’ll you show the finish article.
Okay, so now we’re getting with the spoon and I started to carve it out and put it in rough shape. You can see the bottom on the carve and you can see extra handle on the other end. So now what you need to do is hold that handle that most people do and able to carve the spoon like so. The difficult it comes so I'm carving the spoon out. It’s difficult to come so I want to carve on this edge and I turn this spoon round and you just turn it this way because most of people are right handed see that in and holding the spoon and you seem gouging towards yourself through this.
So by getting right over handle and I can see you just turn this spoon round in the middle to up and outer edge. So middle to one inch, turn it round and make it to the other edge. Now, it’s such a simple technique that makes a carve and spoon really quick. What I want I just chop this thick off I go myself stream. All right, just come in then making this knife. So you still attached to the stick as you can see. You’ve carve the bowl it out now, finish it up shaping and all what we’re going to do now is just carve through the ends here and just wiggle it down.
Just keep waiting now. There you go one finish spoon. Now, merely I've done it in a hurry and it’s not the prettiest of spoons but it’s very thin, okay. It’s a bit too narrow, really not perfect. But certain use is a lot easier keeping the soft handle on it. So that’s my advice. Have fun guys and see what you come up with.
