Ivo: Hi folks, it's Ivo here from Thundermist Lure Company. Night time is almost upon us, it is late summer. And on today's episode, we're targeting Channel Catfish. We're fishing a river system, we're using cut bait today, I am fishing with Claudio, Phil and Vingenzo.
And let me just show you our setup here. What I have is, I have a sliding sinker setup and you could see here it stops at this swivel. Swivel acts is for two reasons. One, it stops your sinker from sliding down to your line and two, when you catch those catfish, they twist and turn and they twist your line up quite badly. So with this swivel here, you'll prevent that from happening. And the other advantage is with this system, my bait is going to be resting right on the bottom and with this river system the way it is, currents drifting this way, if my bait is suspended that current is going to drift that scent trail any which way. But if I am on the bottom, it is going to have a scent trail and lead it right to the catfish.
Now as far as the bait is concerned, what I am using today is just a piece of cut sucker. You could use any cut bait that you like. Cut bait is very effective and works very well. So we're going to get started and what we're hoping for today is not a lot of fish but we're targeting 10-pound channel cats and higher and we're going to be fishing into the evening. These catfish actually sit during the day in this deeper water, it is about 35 to 38 feet just beside me here and then it comes up on a shelf here.
What we're going to do is, we're going to target the area right at the break where the deep water and the break meet. And we're going to have our lines sitting right at that break and that break will actually act as a valley to carry our set bait towards the catfish so they have an easier time finding it. So we're going to get started here and we'll do some filming into the night and hopefully we can hook into a couple of fish. Stay tuned.
Okay, now the reason that I have 3 ounces of lead on there, it is a very strong current out here. And that 3 ounces are going to be needed to anchor my line down in one particular spot. Now I will tell you this also, it's a very-very comfortable way to fish. All we're going to do now, once our line settles, we're just going to sit. You could put your rod in the rod holder if you'd like but I would much rather hold on then my rod and feel that bite. And the other thing is with these channels cats, there'll be one of two things. They'll either bite and take your rod like so and when they do that, just either bow to them or give them a little bit of line before you set the hook. Or secondly, you'll notice your line will just get slack.
All they've done there is, they've picked up your bait and they've swam towards the boat. So if that happens, pick up the slack, have a feel and set the hook. So we're just going to sit back and relax. It will be night soon and these catfish will become active. Best time to fish for channel cats, during the night or during low light conditions, cloudy, hazy, rainy days. They're nocturnal in nature, so they feed a lot more during evening and darkness. So let us see what happens.
Wow! What a hit that was folks. I had that rod right in my hand. He just about rip that rod right out of my hand, I opened up my bail with that sliding sinker. Oh! We got a line tangled up here. But that sliding sinker, he was able to take the bait. And I am fishing right beside Claudio here. We got Phil coming off to this side. Well, this is real life fishing. How about if you cut your line Claudio? This is a battle royal, let me tell you. I've caught a lot of fish. These channel cats are really something. Okay Phil, I am going to kind of guide him towards the boat here, so one chance to scoop him up.
He is thinking to run.
Claudio: He's not ready.
Ivo: He's not ready yet. Wow! There we go. Nice net job. Okay!
Claudio: It is a monster.
Male Speaker: Let's take a look at. Oh! What a beautiful channel cat.
Ivo: That is a monster.
Male Speaker: Claudio, you're going to have to get an estimation on this one. He is pretty big.
Claudio: Oh! I've got a weigh scale.
Ivo: You have a weigh scale.
Claudio: Of course, I do.
Male Speaker: Actually, so do I now that you've mentioned it and you know what...
Ivo: He is just come off the hook.
Male Speaker: Really!
Ivo: Look at that, oh! How's that for a catfish? Hey, night time channel catfishing folks. So much fun and very relaxing and you know what we just got started, so we still have some time ahead of us. Let us get a scale line him quickly and we'll get him back in the water.
Okay folks, we just weighed him, he tipped the scale at 17 pounds. What a beautiful fish. Okay, Vingenzo, let us see if we can get that camera and you can --let us release this guy. What a nice fish. Beautiful color, take a look at that. Isn't that nice? Gorgeous, gorgeous fish! Nice color to him, absolutely gorgeous. Okay, oh! Wow! I think he is ready.
Here is another one. Well, you think I am going to say what 10 minutes guys between bait. It looks like it is my night tonight. I don't know if you noticed there out folks but when I load --when I hooked up that cut bait, I made you that the skin was still on the bait and I put the hook through the skin which helps hold your bait onto your hook. He is dogging it now. There he goes, there he goes. Feel and drag. There we go. Not as big as the other one. Definitely, not as big as the other one, but probably about the 10 pounds, I am going to say. Here we go. Here we go. That is a descent fish. What do you think Vingenzo?
Vingenzo: Ivo, not as big as last done.
Ivo: He is about eleven pounds. I am going to say 11. Yeah, I am going to say eleven. He has got some weight to him. Okay Let us get him in.
