We are talking about the five faults of fielding and we are on number five. It has to deal with the throw. Your infielders made the catch. He has made a great play. Now, he is going to throw the ball and what I found is, fielders just like the break away lay-up, the point guard steals the ball and he is going to lay-up and he is all alone and he misses the bucket, misses the lay-in and easy lay-in and he misses it. And the reason he misses it is doubt, he does not want to look bad in front.
He has a break away lay-up it is an easy bucket and the first thing it is. “Oh! I just cannot just miss this”. And those negative thoughts is the same thing it occurs to an infielder and a great drill. For what I teach my infielder is, you want to look at the first pace men and you want to see the numbers that we see the letters on his chest and you want to pick for something that your are going to throw it out. Whether it be an actual letter on his jersey, his number or his head but you want to throw it at that target and your thinking should be, “I am going to hit that target.” Do not let any negative thought come in to mind because if even if you miss that target. What it tends to happen is if you are aiming for his letters, even if you missed, you are missing the circle right here and it is an easily a catchable ball.
But if you are just and you are not throwing and you are not throwing for a target, you tend to think of the negative things that might happen like, “oh, I just do not want to miss it. I just do not want to bounce it.” That is the one problem I see in fielders have all the time, they just have to let it fly, picking the target and the other things is do not nurse it, just let it fly picking your target, you going to be much more successful.
