Hi folks! It's Ivo here from Thundermist Lure Company and what a day we have today. We're out here in the Great Lakes Fishing Lake Erie. Today's target is walleye. I've got brother-in-law with me Tony and what we're going to do?
We're going to troll in about 40 feet of water and that we're going to use my favorite lure, the viper spoon. I'm going to run this gold viper and you could see I've rigged it up with an artificial worm. You don't need the real bait, if you don't want to use real bait. And again, nothing hi-tech, if you don't have downriggers and planer boards, it's not a problem. I'm just going to run this diver, it's a jet diver and this will get me down to about 40 feet of water exactly where I want to be. I'm just going to troll that viper at above two to three miles an hour to see if we can hook in some walleye.
Tony on the other hand, he is actually running a dipsy. Same concept, again nothing hi-tech, but this dipsy diver will take his line down and off to the side of the boat. And he is also running a viper spoon and he is running his favorite color which happens to be the green mackerel. He, instead of a worm, he's rigged up an artificial minnow which is actually -- this is actually a power minnow.
So we're going to put the two down. I've got the gold, he's got the green. We've got some other colors to choose if these ones don't produce. But we're going to putt along and see if can hook into some walleye. Stay tuned.
It's no wonder these viper spoons are walleye magnet. Take a look at that action. Look at that flash and flutter. Those walleye will see that flutter from mile away and when they come up to the spoon and they see that nice offering on the back, wamble, they hit. What a combination? I'll love it. Okay, here we go. Tony, the gold straight first. I like your green, the green mackerel Tony. But you know this gold color on Lake Erie, because they're feeding on gold beads, I think that gold is a natural attraction.
I got a ton of line out there. Boy! I didn't take a line long. We just come out here in 55 feet of water and no sooner do we do that, do we get our hook up. This is the way to bring them in. Basically, you just crank in on them, pull back, take up your line and you just basically do that time after time. If he decides to start running, let him run and then you'll gain on them eventually.
The way these jet divers work, you have to let out so much line to get so deep. So I had over 150 feet of line out there, but this size 40 jet diver which actually brings me down the 50 feet. So I was fishing 50 feet down in a boat looking at the graph here, 55 feet of water. Actually, this feels like a real descent fish.
I'll tell you these viper spoons are like a walleye marinate. They just can't stay away from them. Last year here on Erie, we had a hay day. But you know what, it doesn't matter what body of water you're on or how you're fishing if you're targeting walleye, these viper spoons turn right on.
So I'm running the Berkley Power worm on the back of this viper spoon. Even though it's not a real worm, it's still creating a scent trail and that's the beauty of these viper spoons. These fish see the lure, they come up, they see the extra offering, they hit the bait. We've noticed that our strike ratios are up at least 5:1 using a viper spoon over other lures.
I'm going to ride. I'm right into the boat here. Very careful, now when you get them close to the pole, a lot of times they get that extra headshake and they're gone.
Okay, considering I'm landing on myself, I had a little difficulty there, but not a bad walleye folks. Descent sized walleye on Lake Erie here and you could see that gold bucktail viper. We got them on the last -- look at that and they just came out, got him on the last brunk. But that is one nice walleye and that's typical of what you'll find here on Lake Erie and I'll tell you folks, we just got started. Tony and I are going to keep trolling away here and we're going to go after some more of these walleye. Glad you could join us. Until next time good fishing.
