Disk is my passion. I love it very much and I would like to teach you a little bit about what we do.
The foundation, of course, to the flying disk is throwing and catching. First of all, we learn to catch. If somebody throws it to you and you cannot catch it, you could get knocked in the head or somewhere else. I will start off teaching people how to do the alligator catch.
Basically, just like an alligator’s mouth, as the disk comes in, you catch it just like that. This allows you, when you are waiting, for this hand to protect your nose because that is the first thing that hurts most if you get hit by a disk. So, alligator catch.
From there, as you get accustomed to how the disk sort of feels and flies, you can go to a one-handed catch with thumbs up like this or one-handed catch with thumbs down. Generally, above the shoulders is thumbs down, below the shoulders is thumbs up. Under the leg, I guess that is thumbs down for that.
As the disk is coming in, you want to become soft to the disk’s movement, so as that hits your hand, you do not want to come at it. You want to follow it and sort of initiate its motion, meet it and continue that energy.
With freestyle, we do that. We take it and then we move it around, and do a trick with it. We are taking that energy and redirecting it, and then I might go into a trick throw right up in keeping that continuous line active. That is really what I love about playing freestyles. It is continuing this energy, moving between myself and the person that I am playing with.
You can practice catches by setting yourself up and just kind of moving around and doing all these different types of motions.
Of course, the most often practice part of catching is the infamous throw or drop. You must catch it by picking it up off the ground, something I have practiced many, many hours in my life.
That is a little bit about catching. Thank you very much.
