Nia Egwin: Jambo! I am Nia, and we are showing you today how to celebrate Kwanzaa. In
this segment, we will show how to properly light the seven candles. The first
candle or Mishumaa is the black candle. The black candle is placed in the middle
of the Kinara. The black candle represents Unity, the first principle in the Nguzo
Saba.
The next day of Kwanzaa, December 27 is Kujichagulia. On this day, first red
candle, next to Umoja candle should be lit. On the next day of Kwanzaa,
December 28 is Ujima. On that day a green candle. Again that's next to the Umoja
candle should be lit.
On the next day, December 29 is Ujamaa, a red candle should be lit. On the
following day, December 30th, Nia, a green candle should be lit. On the day
following, December 31st, a red candle for Kuumba should be lit. And our final
candle, end day Imani on January 1st should be lit.
Now, that we know how to light the candle, next we will be discussing what to do
during Kwanzaa.
