Changing the oil on your mower is essential because the oil is lubricating, cooling and cleaning the engine and the oil is going to get dirty. So just follow these steps to change your oil.
Changing your oil on a regular basis is the best way to make sure your mower’s engine lasts for years. Consult your owners manual to see how often to change it. Here’s what you’ll need to get the job done; a drop cloth, work gloves, a wrench to remove the battery cables, a socket wrench, a cleaning brush, an oil container, a new oil filter, an oil filter wrench and fresh oil.
Now before performing any maintenance on your running mower, read the manufacturer’s instruction carefully. If your uncomfortable working on your mower; call a professional for help.
The first thing to do is let the mower run for about a minute to warm it up. It will be easier to change the oil while it’s warm. Any lawn mower maintenance should be performed in a well ventilated area. If you’re working in a garage, open the door for maximum air circulation and cover the work area with a drop cloth.
Brush off any loose clippings, dust and debris but be careful, the engine will still be hot. Then for safety, disconnect the battery. Always remove the black or negative cable first. Then remove the red or positive cable. If necessary, remove the mower deck hand blades to access the oil drain area. Every mower is different, so follow the manufactures instructions.
Start by opening the oil fill cap and open the cap on the drain valve. Slide the manufacturers drain tube onto the valve. Push in the valve and turn it slightly counter clockwise.
Now that the valve is unlocked, pull it to drain the oil into the container. Once the oil has drained, close the valve and recap the port. Then remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench and add a new one. Add the manufacturers recommended oil. Wipe up any excess oil with a shop rag. Never pour oil down the drain, instead, contact your local recycling center for oil disposal instructions.
Reattach the mower deck if it had been removed and then reconnect the battery, starting with the positive cable and then the negative cable.
With a regular oil change, your mower will run more efficiently. For more tips, watch our other how-to videos at Lowes.com/videos.
