How to Change a Violin String

Changing a string can seem a bit daunting but if you’re patient and works slowly, you shouldn’t have too many problems. You want to begin by holding the violin in the secure position, I recommend sitting down with the instrument in your lap and then you want to remove the old string by slowly turning the peg towards you and just pulling the end of the string out on both sides. To install the new string, you want to start by threading the end of the string to the small hole in the peg and then turn the peg once or twice around just until you have a little bit of that string end secure. And then you want to hold the peg and the end of the string with one hand and with the other hand, you go ahead and feed the ball end through the hole in the tail piece and with that same hand, keeping tension on the string at all times, pull upwards until you reach the not, keeping that tension and then slowly wind the peg away from you until it is the correct tension.

Make sure to tune the string to the correct pitch slowly and tuning too quickly can result to a broken instrument. If you’re unsure about any of these, be sure to ask your teacher or trust a professional.
