How to Change the Background of Your Wikispace

Alright, today I’m going to teach you how to change the background image and colors of your Wikispace. Now to do this, we’re going to have to get into the Template code that you can edit as an organizer of your Wikispace and I want to show you how to do that. First thing we need to do, if you are wanting to change the background image of your Wikispace, you’re first going to have to upload the image to your Wikispace. Let me show you how to do that. We’re going to go to Edit. We’re going to click on the little image icon and then we’re going to click on Upload Files. We’re going to click on Browse and then upload the photo that you’d like to do. This is actually a folder for a website that I did for a friend of mine and I’m just going to actually choose his background right here, just as an example. Then click on upload and there’s the file. Now, you have the option to—once you upload it, you can go back to insert files and you have two options. You can insert the file. If you insert the file, it’s just going to put it right there in the white space where the main content goes within your Wikispace. That’s not what we want or you can choose links to file. Now, I would recommend doing that, just to grab a code because you do have to get the URL for where the image is on your Wikispace. And there’s a way to figure that out but just for now so that we can learn how to actually get the URL for where your background image is going to be, I'm going to go ahead and just like that. Once I do, I’m going to double click on my image and it’s now showed up right there. Now, it’s not going to—I’m going to show you how to get the URL, it’s not going to show me right now but before I do that, I’m going to click on Save and actually I had uploaded an earlier one before. So, let me just—I’m going to hover over this, put my mouse on it and I’m going to right click if I’m on a PC. I’m on a Mac so I’m going to do control and then hit my mouse and I’m going to click on copy link location okay. Now, the next thing we need to do is to get into our Template code. So, we’re going to click on Manage Wiki, we’re going to click on Look and Feel. We’re going to click on change or make a new theme and now Wikispaces gives you all of these default themes but in order to change the template code, we need to actually make a custom theme from one of these default themes that Wikispaces has given us. So to do that, we go down here where it says Make a New Theme and we can name it anything we want. I think I’m going to take the Glass theme right here and you use that one as a starting point from my custom ones. So, I’m going to just call it Glassy and right here you’re going to choose Glass because that’s the theme that I want to edit, then click on Edit and now if you’re a teacher you’re probably thinking that this looks really confusing and it would be if you don’t know anything about CSS and HTML.
