It's for you to play off, OK? Don't hit the rock; don't hit the rock, oh! Thank dude, don't hit the rock. So this pro bike racer says to me, "Bruce, I was thinking don't hit the rock, don't hit the rock. I was so focused on not hitting the rock and then, boom! I hit the rock. Why did I hit the rock?" Because the mind doesn't understand the word 'don't'. It understands the noun 'the rock'. Don't hit the rock. Oh! Look at that rock! I am not going to hit that rock. I am going to stay so focused on that rock to make sure I don't hit it, that I don't have a choice, but they hit the rock. I mean that's what's going to happen a 100% of the time. Take a look.
Do my arms move? Remember one of the three things you have to do. We will try it one more time. Do my arms move? Really slide. Well, if I am looking at the rock, where am I pulling the bike? Imagine being on the motorcycle and looking at the cliff at high speed, less than optimum. But, if I pick a line between the rocks and focus on the line, we think sometimes that we are being positive when we say don't. It's still negative.
To be positive has to be positive. It's not like a reaction to negative. It has to be positive. So, what do you see when you look in the mirror? Did you see the cat? Did you see a lion? Did you see a kitten? What is it that you see when you look in the mirror? What is that you feel when you get your feet wet? What is it you feel when you wake up the morning after rest? And how are you going to correct that, so that it will line up with your unquote persona? Can't just intent in your mental training. If you don't add a component of training mentally into each component of your physical training, you are going to be missing something. If you do add in a component of mental training with your physical training, you are going to have the Michael Jordan effect. You are going to be getting three for two against your opponents. It's what's going to give you that little extra edge.
Be aware of body sensations, what am I feeling? What are my muscles feeling? What's happening to me at different times having out of focus? The other one was an inner focus. Now be aware of the external world. It's the synchronicity and the synergistic effect of all the synchronicities that you put together. What's in here? What's out there? How do I feel on my bike? How do I feel on shoes today running? And then breaking it down, focusing on one piece at a time.
If I am running, which I don't do anymore, but if I am doing anything and I find my mind starting to wonder, and I am in a race, well I am not going to sit down and take a minute and breathe. That exercise becomes fairly dysfunctional in a track and I have done that. So what can you do? Right, pick a piece of your technique. Pick the plant of your step, pick the release of your step, pick the swing of your arm, pick the stroke of your right leg, pick the upstroke of your right leg, pick a small component of what you are doing and lock into that.
If you are on your bike, start either here, here or there, and what are you feeling? Ever have a depth quip on the bars? Ever have toes that feel like this, release some. Work your way up the body in relaxing it while you are riding. And if switch your cadence to switch to looking at cadence when you start this. Practice this and watch your RPMs go up.
