How to Check Your ATF Fluid

Male Speaker: Check your car's automatic transmission fluid monthly. This only takes a few minutes but can increase the lifetime of your car considerably. Park a car on a level surface and start the engine leaving your gear in neutral or park unless instructed otherwise in your owner's manual. Find the ATF dipstick located at the back of the engine. It looks similar to the engine oil dipstick, but is the shorter of the two. Pull at it, removing the instrument entirely. Wipe the dipstick with a rag, then insert it back in the engine all the way. Remove it again, and study the tip. Do you see two different markings? Does one say cold and one say warm? Check warm, if the ATF does not reach the full line add fluid to the hole that dipstick came out of. Use a long narrow funnel, adding a little ATF at a time. You will find it easier to add fluid than to remove it. Place the dipstick back when you are through. Your car does not use up automatic transmission fluid, so if you are low, your car may have a leak.
