It's a good idea to check your tire pressure as often as once in a month. Be sure to check the pressure when the tires are cold, this means the car has been stationary for at least three hours. Tire pressure must be checked using a tire pressure gauge. It is not accurate simply to look at it. If you do not have a gauge, gas stations and garages should be equipped with ones you can use. Your car's tires have precise air pressure specifications and you will usually find this information on a sticker, found on the driver's doorjamb, in the trunk, or in the glove compartment.

The only indication of tire pressure listed on the tire itself is for the maximum pressure and this is not the number you need. Remove the cap on the air valve by unscrewing it. Be sure to place it somewhere safe so you don't loose it. Press your tire pressure gauge against the valve and hold it securely, if you're a hissing sound, press harder because you are letting air not. Check the measurement on the gauge.
