How to Choose Between Inkjet and Laser Printers
Today where going to talk about that aged old question, Ink Jet versus Laser Jet. Ink versus laser, which one you should you pick either for your home or your business? I’m going to try simplify that today by talking about some of the things that your going to be printing.
First of all, it used to be that Ink Jets were a lot more expensive to print per page than Laser Jet. That used to be the rule of thumb. Well, that is changed now. Now, of the big things inkjet manufactures came out and did as they separated each of the individual colors. And by doing that, they where able to decrease the cost of the ink change the user, the amount of ink that was being used and ultimately become more efficient and more cost-effective than traditionally your laser printers are. So now, inkjets are little bit less money per page.
If you’re going to be thinking about printing things like documents or proposals or large contracts or if your going to be thinking about printing things such as photographs, maybe your going to do brochures and things like that, that’s really where things coming to play. You see, it’s not about the printer anymore but it’s a lot more about different kinds of paper that you’re going to use.
As the matter fact, I brought a couple examples out with me here but you’ll end up buying paper just for printing photographs. And when will look at with that paper looks like, that’s here behind me, but this paper is a lot different than your traditional paper that you’ll use for printing lasers or document. It’s a lot stronger, it’s a lot heavier and you might not be able pick it up cameras here but its also got a little bit gloss to it. So, when you want to print out a photograph, it’s going to look incredible on paper like this, something that the laser jet typically can’t or won’t do.
The other thing that I wanted to point out was to do with the laser is that it typically is a little more expensive to buy the unit versus the inkjet printers. There’s a lot more going on. But let’s face it, if you’re working in office space, they’ve got big trays to handle things like 500 sheets of paper. When we look at that same example over here on ink jet printer, you can only get maybe 50 to a hundred sheets in here. So, if you printing a lot of documents, you’re going to be running all day to this unit changing the paper or is this one you can put whole stacks and reams in.
And to show you the inner workings of the laser printer, the technology works for what’s called toner and the drum. What you’re going to do is you can now replace toner cartridges again depending on the printer every thousand to 2000 sheets of paper and of course the drums are going to be good for something like 10,000 sheets of paper. So, you’re going to basically be using this in a high volume capacity type environment where as if we go back to our inkjet friend again over here, the ink cartridges work a lot differently. If you use a lot of black, you’re going to go through the black cartridges. I’ll just pull that out here. And again, we used ink and then we also used what’s called print heads. In some inkjet printers, they separate the two and then some may actually put the print heads right on the cartridges.
I think to summarize your choice when you’re choosing between your printers; ink jet is definitely good for the home environment. It’s definitely good for the small business. You’re typically you going to get things like fantastic photos especially if you start to use with specialty papers.
On the laser side, we’re talking about maybe bigger offices, high-high volume and again not needing to change things all the times such as putting 500 sheets inside the of the sheets tray.
That’s about it, that’s how you make your choice when you’re looking at the ink jet versus laser technology. Hopefully, that helped you decide what your going to choose.
