Welcome back.
One of the questions I hear a lot is what makes a good survivor knife? Or what should I look for in a survival knife?
We have small collection survival knives. We have a Gerber, we have a cold steel, and we have a buck nighthawk. Let’s take a look for each one of these. One thing that I look for is, it will fit a belt. It’s got a belt loop on it. Lanyard and where you can tie it to your thigh.
Notice that the Gerber knife does not have a thigh attachment. Well, that’s okay because it’s not a real long knife. Anyways, it’s pretty comfortable to wear. This Gerber has a nice firm rest right there. Now I used this knife last year to skin two deer. It worked pretty good.
Next one is the buck nighthawk. They’re usually sold at some of your big box mart. Notice there is no lanyard detachment. There’s no thigh attachment. I really do not consider this to be a very good, which you call a survival knife. It is an all around good knife though. Once again this one is made out of cork, made on a stainless steel.
In my opinion, no good knife should ever been made of stainless. Why? Because it’s hard to sharpen and it does not hold an edge very well.
My personal favorite is the cold steel branded knife. This is the Recon Scout. It’s got here lanyard, it’s got your thigh attachment and this knife is made up of carbon steel, not stainless. This knife will hold the edge better than any of the other two. It will be easier to sharpen and it will serve you better than a stainless steel knife.
And one of the points that I forgot to mention with the others, that whenever you’re thinking about buying a knife, the strap should be across the thing right here. And across the handle, unlike nighthawk that has the strap up here at the top.
As you're carrying this knife, as you’re sitting down and moving around, this knife or if you wear it on harness and wore it upside down, this knife has the possibility of backing out. You should really consider twice—think twice before buying a knife, with strap up here at the top.
Notice the Gerber. The Gerber strap is down here at the bottom.
Well, that’s it. So whenever you’re looking at buying a good survival knife, remember to look for lanyard detachment, look for a thigh attachment and look for carbon steel blade. But over all, I recommend cold steel.
Thank you for your time.
