If you want to know if a watermelon is ripe, you don’t want to give it a thumb test because that doesn’t work. There is only one sure way to know if the watermelon is the one you want and that is to turn it over and look for a creamy or yellow colored splotch on the bottom. That is a sure sign that this watermelon reached its peak ripeness so it’s going to be full of flavor and nutrients. Now the most important nutrient in a watermelon isn’t a vitamin or a mineral. It’s actually an anti oxidant called lycopene, which you may have heard of because tomatoes are chunk full of it too and it’s what gives watermelon this gorgeous pink color.
