Hi, I’m Ashley. Welcome to my studio. Today, we’re going to be talking drying materials basics, the pencil. So, when selecting a pencil for your artwork that you would like make you really want to take and to consideration the hardness of a pencil. With most pencils you will have an H and a B. A B will be the softest pencil meaning and by soft I mean the graphite in the pencil will be soft and the H pencil is a harder pencil.
I like to use a harder pencil to start my work because I tend a very heavy hand and if I start with the softer pencil, if I make a mistake it’s you have a lot of graphite or you redone the paper and you can’t work over it and you can’t really. It’s harder to take away than to add more.
So, when I talking about hardness of the graphite in the pencil, the H pencils are the hardest. So, this is a 6H pencil, this is almost, I sometimes used a 9H pencil which is basically the hardest pencil that you can get, and this is 6H pencil. It’s about the hardest you can get and I’m going to show you exactly what the line looks like when you draw with the 6H pencil.
It’s a very, very hard pencil so it’s not going to make a very dark line. If you want to have a darker line with just one stroke you rather use a softer pencil which would be the first hardest pencil is in H pencil, and this is the H pencil and this is the line that an H pencil would make. And if you can see here it’s a lot darker than the 6H pencil.
And then even softer than the H pencil is a B pencil and this is actually a 2B pencil. This is about the third softest pencil that there is available. And you can see this next to the H pencil and this makes a much darker line and this will go to about I think a 9B pencil also. Very dark line and it’s going to be lot harder to erase.
I frankly do not like to use B-pencils unless I have very, very dark area in drawing that I would not want to use an H pencil for because it would takes a lot longer to absolutely make it dark. So, that’s about it for pencils.
