Hi, I’m David Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom and we’re at Weston Nurseries today out in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. I’m walking through their tree yard to tell you a little bit of a tip. If you’re selecting a new tree, a great time of the year to do it is fall. Not only because fall is a wonderful time to plant but you get a sneak peek at what the color of your particular tree is going to change to. So if you buy your tree in the spring, it’s great because you can see it leaving out, you can see how healthy it is but you get the same thing in the fall but you also get the benefit of seeing the colors.
So here we are ion front of an American hornbeam, you can see it’s changing into the sort of orangey rust color and if you love this, and that’s going to look great in your home, maybe that’s the tree for you. If all the other perimeters like height and size are perfect as well.
What about some of the other trees? Well, you have things like the elms which tend to change to more of a yellowy color of the dawn redwood which tend to change to a rusty tan color. I can see some of that color beginning to come out at this time of the year. Fall is the ideal time to plant many trees and shrubs. It’s kind of a bonus second planting season.
Watering is not as much of an issue in the fall either because temperatures are tending to get cooler not warmer. So walk through the nursery in the fall, great deals, often you’ll find two for one sales or maybe half price and you get to see what color your tree will change to as it matures in your own yard.
Come back every week for all of our tips and some helps here at Growing Wisdom.
