Hi! My name is Dr. Gordon Rye. I am a dentist in Fairfax, Virginia. And we are talking about teeth whitening. In this clip we are talking about off the counter products.
There are various whitening toothpastes and strips and paid-ons which are ultimately an expensive and easy to use and they do offer some control for those who like to control the process themselves. They are also beneficial for patients who have a lot of dental anxiety and just don't want to go to the dentist anymore than they have to, they can do these off the counter products at home.
The main benefit of over-the-counter products is probably the cost. They are relatively inexpensive, ranging anywhere from $5 to $60. Most costs less than $35; some actually costs less than $10. Another benefit of over-the-counter products is that they can be used immediately; you don't have to go to the dentist first. You can just buy them off the shelf, take them home and start using them immediately.
Some of the drawbacks of over-the-counter tooth whitening products are that some people don't realize that they are actually not good catalysts for tooth whitening, and there is no professional available to make sure that everything works correctly. Sometimes the doses are not listed on the products and sometimes they use alternative whitening agents which may not work as well. Sometimes customers will develop sensitivity and that can be difficult to deal with. Your professional can definitely help you with those. Also, if used incorrectly you may get some irritated gums which is something else that your dental professional is best suited to handle for you.
It's a good idea to have your teeth professionally cleaned, have all your cavities filled and make sure your gums are healthy before starting the use of any of these off the counter products. For our next clip we are going to be talking about professional at home bleaching kits.
