Hi! My name is Greg Slade I am a Manager of 4wheel Parts here in Raleigh, North Carolina. Let me take a moment to talk to you about proper winch for your vehicle. Now I know there is a lot of winches on the market and this can be a confusing time. But it is very important to pick the right winch for your vehicle and your vehicle's needs. So first thing you want to qualify is how you are going to use your winch and what you expect it to do. So, the first step is finding out how heavier winch do I need for my vehicle. Well, a general rule of thumb is one and a half times the weight of the vehicle.
So, the average jeeps are between 4500-5000 pounds, we like to start off around 8000 pound winch. Generally between 8000 and 9500 is a good selection for a winch on a jeep that's has got a small rough use. Once you run into a larger or a half tones three quarter ton and one ton trucks, really not need to start thinking about, you have got the 9000 pounds, you got the 12000 pounds winches, 15000 pounds winches and the Big Mac Daddy 165.
So again we really want to find out, how much our vehicle weighs and what are we going to use our winch for. So with that, there is a couple of basic styles of winches we want to talk about. You have got your 9 inch gradient winch such as this warn 9.5 XP I have here on the counter or your warn 95TI which is an integrated winch and one of the biggest differences you will see is, this non-integrated has a has a separate Solenoid box right here. Now you could mount this here on top of the winch, alongside of the winch or great feature behind this box is you can remote mount this anywhere you want.
You could map this on your bumper, under the hood or inside the vehicle or even at back of the vehicle, really whatever suits your needs. Now one of the great things about this is this Solenoid box is what really controls your winch. This is the life blood of your winch and the brain behind the unit. What you do is you unplug this cap here and you plug your winch remote in and this gives you full control. So, again you can mount it on the winch or you can remote mount it; one of the great benefits of non-integrated winch.
What my personal favorite is an integrated winch. Now this gets all of your components in a one tight little package and these things are really great. The water resistance, the fairly sealed against the weather and they just work really well. They are fairly simple plug and play. You really don't have to do any auxiliary wiring, you just take them out of the box, bolt them on your bumper, hook up two power wires and boom; you are ready to winch, you are ready to go pull somebody out of the mud. Hopefully not you, because we know you don't get stuck.
So with that being set, you have got your integrated such as this 95T, you have got your non-integrated such as this warn 95X. Again either winch is suitable for just about every need out there. But if space constraints, if you are having a problem with space constraints, you might not want to think about non-integrated winches. It is all you have to deal with is mounting the winch itself and take remote out of the box.
Now whether you choose Warn, Smittybilt or Mile Marker all three winches are great and they are great at what they do. You just need to choose a winch that's right size for your vehicle and within your budget. One thing you remember is people say, well my vehicle only weighs 6000 pounds, I will only need a 6000 pound winch. Well, that would be true, if you are always pulling on flat ground. But we know that when we are stuck it is generally mire deep in mud or stuffed against a rock, or may be in a ditch and some inclement weather. Your vehicle weight is compounded by the media that you are stuck in, whether be mud, snow or rock.
So again you want to think about how heavy your truck is or how you plan to use your winch. If you are one of those extreme rock crawling guys, may be you need a little extra winch because you are always pulling uphill against the dead load. May be you are a mud guy, you know that mud man, that's like glue. It will just suck your vehicle in and its stays there, you need a lot of winch to get it out. But whatever you choose I want to make sure you know that, here at 4wheel Parts, we are here to help you with your winch selection.
