Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on how to keep your copy of Ubuntu running clean.
Now even in Ubuntu, things pile up a little bit. Fortunately, Ubuntu has its own janitor. So we’ll click on system, administration, and click on computer janitor. Now, you got to put your password in and now, the computer janitor goes out and tries to find and remove software packages you might not need anymore. And also it suggests configuration changes that might benefit you, so it’s busy working.
Now in this case, I just created this install of Ubuntu so my computer is fresh, so the computer janitor hasn’t found anything. But when it does, you can see here you have the option to remove or fix. It will show you what the problem is or what software it’s suggesting should be removed. It can do that and when you’re all done, close. So in this way, Ubuntu keeps tabs on the programs you use, the settings that you have and when you use the computer janitor, it can recommend things that you can remove from your system because you haven’t used them or changes that you should make in your configuration that will make your use better.
So, that’s the computer janitor in Ubuntu and that’s all there is to it.
