Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. Fella Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on how to clean up your Windows desktop. Now a lot of times in installing a lot of programs, downloading files, making shortcuts, you get a desktop that looks messy like this and that gets to be that you can’t find anything. I’ve seen people who have their entire desktop covered with icons. So to try to organize your life and get things a little bit more clear, sit down at your desktop.
First, right click, select view, and make sure you have Auto Arranger. Now look at all the icons on your desktop. All of us have some programs that we use all the time. I know I use Firefox, so left click that, drag it over to the far left side. TuneUp utilities I use that, drag it to the left side. File Zoa, drag it to the left side. So as you can see I already were starting to get some suborder and that the programs that I use the most are now getting to the lined up over on the left side.
Now a lot of these other things are files that have similar purposes. So we’ll take and drag some of those into folders. You can put a thousand files inside of one folder and it takes up much less room. I often take and create a folder called miscellaneous that I use to put those random program icons that I don’t use all the time but that they’re there. So when there comes a time when I’m looking for something and I cannot see that on my desktop I opened up the miscellaneous folder. But in the meantime all of my other icons are easy to find because I've got this stuff out of the way.
This is one way that you could organize your desktop, sit down, look at things, if you have five icons that pertain to printing, right click, say new, say folder, call it print related, drag those five icons into that folder. Then if you have something that pertains to printing, double click on it and you’ll find your print icons. If you have eight things that pertain to multimedia, like QuickTime, Winamp, iTunes, whatever create a folder, multimedia, media related, put all those icons in there. You can get many, many files inside of a folder that takes up less room. So create folders that pertain to a topic and then put those icons in there.
So that’s a way to clean up your Windows desktop, make and see if you can find things and that’s all there is to it.
