The trumpet should be dismantled before putting it into the warm soapy water. Each section washed separately and never put the corks or felts into the water. Mark the corks and valves/with order of place and take off the finger buttons, the corks, felts springs etc. and now wash everything after a soak of an hour (excepting the corks and felts taken off)pretty much as directed here. There are brushes with both nylon and other non scratching materials used instead of metal for their 'rods'.Always use these. Rinse the horn, it parts thouroughly and DRY COMPLETELY...or set up for fels and cork getting wet as well as increase in corrosion is established.

its true, the slides WILL corrode. My 4 year old trumpet was never cleaned (stupid I know) and after 4 years none of the slides could slide. they were literally soldered together.

DO NOT put your valves in the water ... the felt and cork use on the valves get wet and never actually dry. The felt is destroyed essentially and you've then got metal to metal! Also, once a year? NOOOOO! Slides will corrode from saliva and could cost lots of money (including possibly solder work) to fix.
