Hello and welcome to another quick tip from Eric the Car Guy. Today, I’m going to be doing a sort of a video response to my good friend. He would ask me about a sticky throttle on out on a Saturn. Remember one cause of this is basically gum up or just varnish that builds up around the throttle plate itself. And as it tries to move, it gets stocked and can’t quite move. So you get that initial hard push on the pedal. So, here’s a quick and easy way to take care of that problem.
Part one, we need to get access to the throttle plate. Once you see a rubber snorkel on the way so you need to remove that in order to get to the throttle plate itself. Next, you want to spray a little bit of throttle cleaner on the inside. And also as you do it, open the throttle up and really get down in there. Take a rug, sort of put it on the top and on the bottom. Just make sure it’s all nice and clean down in there.
When you’re done, put this back. You don’t need to spray so much in there that you basically flat the engine out. If you got to try and start it, it’s difficult to start. Hold the gasket all the way to the floor while you crack the engine. This will put in into what’s called Clear Flat Mode and it probably should start. But you don’t need to use a lot. Mostly what you’re doing is cleaning up with a rug. Also some throttle bodies have a special coding on the outside of them that they do not want certain throttle cleaner sprayed onto it. It’s usually a big warning sticker on the top of those things and most of the time I’ve seen them on forward but this is a special cleaner that you need to use.
I don’t know of the leader cleaners or whatever are universal or what have you. In fact, in some states I think California and New York and like that, I don’t even think they make aerosol, anything like this anymore, but you just need to find some kind of cleaner that you can get down in there and get back—so you can get rid of that ridge of stuff that’s built, that’s causing your throttle to stick.
Anyway, I’m Eric the Car Guy. I hope this tip was helpful. Visit me at ericthecarguy.com or post a text or video response to this video and stay dirty. I’m dirty. Are you dirty?
