Michael Callahan: Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on how to clean-up your Mac's Open With dialog. Now this dialog gets really full from installing programs and after a while, it gets to be on unwieldy and it's loaded with things that you may not want in there any more. I searched for a number of solutions and the best one I found was a script. So we're going to open finder, click on your applications folder, double click on the Apple Script folder and double click on the script editor. We're going to paste this script, which is included in the show notes into the editor.
Now in the show notes, you will see begin script and then this line will start at the bottom, past this word 'note', you'll see 'end script'. You want to put in everything between 'begin script' and 'end script', you don't want to include 'begin script' and 'end script'.
So if you are not sure, come back to this tutorial and look and see, there is no 'begin script' in here, there is no 'end script', you want to leave those out. So once you have it in there, we can see say run. Now as saying that finder will quit and we will relaunch after the launch services' rebuilt is complete. It may take several minutes and you should refrain from using other applications. So we are going to click rebuild. Now close down finder, it's getting there cleaning out all that miscellaneous junk that's accumulated in your Open With dialog.
I want you to see that I have no fear in running this script on my own Mac. It really is an excellent, excellent solution. Launch services rebuild is now complete, we'll say okay, I am back here in the editor. We can do say compile and then we can put a close out. What I'm going to do is save, because this problem may come up again for me. Clean dialogs, save it on my desktop, I'm going to save it as an application, say save. Now, I have it as an application, the next time I may open with dialogs, get clogged up with stuff. So that's cleaning out your Mac's open with dialogs and that's all there is to it.
