Hello and welcome to Caleb’s Tips for the Working Singer.
Today’s topic is five things to do to keep your vocals clear and sounding smooth.
Number one; rest, a full eight hours rest is what you need because your body is a muscle and if you don’t get enough sleep, the muscle in your body gets weak. So please rest, rest, rest.
Number two, avoid talking a lot or loud, preserve your voice with less talking and shouting. Speaking loud can damage your vocal chords and cause you to develop some serious problems like nodules and polyps on your vocal chords.
Number three; avoid teas, coffees, alcohol drinks, ice cream, milk, sodas, peanuts, chips before you sing. These liquids will dehydrate your voice while chips and all kinds of peanuts will leave debris all over your vocal chords and you don’t want that to happen to you as a working singer. No, I don’t think so.
Number four, vocal exercise. Make sure before every performance, you warm up your vocals by doing some type of vocal exercise like buzzing with your teeth that goes a little something like this [Demonstration]. Listen everyone, I know that looks funny, but that’s what you do to warm up your vocal chords and get it prepared. Number two, singing the scales which I start with scale C first using do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do. Remember to use your diaphragm when pushing those notes out and if you want to know more about that, please go to halleonard.com, look for Lead Singer Volume One.
Last but not least, drum roll please. [Drum Rolling]. Number five; water. Drink, drink, drink water. Water is your body’s principal chemical component. It flushes toxins out of vital organs and calling nutrients to the cells and provide a moist environment for the ears, the nose and throat tissue.
