We have mostly demonstrated for you man-to-man principles and drills for teams. I am going to take a few minutes to show you a zone defense for teams. Personally, I think at this level you should be teaching man-to-man defensive skills. However, if you do find that you are going to play a zone at some point, I would like to give you a couple of basic rules. We normally like to choose a principle called the boxed movement for our zone defenses, which means, I want my entire defense to move to the ball as a box and they all need to know where their limits are. My two top people will never drop below this white line. It should be like hitting a wall.
They will always be here and they will never pass the middle of the rim. So, if the ball is all the way in the corner, my top person will never come pass the rim. That is his area of the box, never goes below, and never comes pass. If the ball goes all the way to the corner – the whole box has moved over, my bottom person is never going to come pass the middle of the rim, so we are in a box.
If they force a cross court pass which they should do, throw the ball cross-court, the entire box should move as one body. The ball goes to the corner, they readjust, do not go below the line and everybody knows their position. The one person on the ball on his own that needs to be close should be arms length away on the ball. Everybody else should be floating in an area. They will always have their hands up. That is our next rule. Rule number two is to always move with your hands up to fill passing lane.
And, rule number three is to force cross-court passes. Three simple rules; arms length away from the ball, we are going to move as a box, and we are going to force cross-court passes. And, you can use any type of zone with this one-three-one, one-two-two, two-one-two, two-three box at once. Whatever you choose, very simple philosophy.
Let us try this. This is a shell drill again. We are going to move ball around the perimeter. They can skip pass up to two or three passes cross-court, which is what we are trying to force and the defense has to move. We are going to time them for one minute. They have to move for one minute without dropping their arms and without stopping to move as a team. They can go for one minute then we switch up. Let us see how they do.

Going to move the ball, everybody moves. Keep your hands up. One persons arm is length away. Arms length away, we slide. Good.

Let us stop right there.
