Youth Football Coaches Handbook
Using Carpet to teach offense line play
Many coaches use the “Plank” which is a 2”x12” board but 12” strips of carpet work the
same and are easier to transport around.
Use Strips of old Carpet to keep players in a wide base.
Inthis punch set players set their knees on the outside of the carpet.
[Training]
Ready, go! Ready, go! Ready, go!
Do stance & starts using the carpet to guide the hand and first step
[Training]
Do fit and drive technique having players chop their feet outside the carpet.
[Training]
Do running drive blocks and coach chopping at impact while keeping a wide base.
A good balanced base is one of the keys to great football technique. Most youth football
players struggle with over-striding and failing to keep their feet moving at impact.
These drills with the carpet can be used to greatly improve many techniques in a short
amount of time.
