Hi! I am Tina Cohen, and in this clip what I am going to show you is how to do creative, funky hair color that suits that emo style.
Basically, what I am going to do is section out a part of her hair, and I am going to dye a really cool purple. So, we are going to get started by brushing the hair, it should be nice and clean, and what I am going to do is I am going to do what's called a panel of color. So what I want to do is figure out where I want to place my panel. For her, I'd like to place it somewhere right in here in the front, so that when it falls with her hair, you can see it in the layers of her hair, to get that really fun funky emo sort of vibe.
So what I am going to do is I am going to take my tail comb that has a point on it, and I am going to section out this part of her hair, and this is where my panel is going to go, right in here. So you want to get that hair that's not going to get dyed out of the way, because you don't want it to accidentally get dyed, or you don't want it to get spots, especially when you are going with a bold color. You don't want to get any of it, anywhere else.
Now, that her hair is sectioned and out of the way, I am going to decide how big I want my panel to be. If you want it to be a little less dramatic, you can take just a small portion of the hair. If you want it to be a little bit more dramatic, you can take a really big portion of the hair, depending on what kind of look you want. I am going to make it pretty good sized. So what I am going to do is I am going to take that panel, figure out exactly the size I want, and I am going to separate it from the rest of the hair. So all this other hair, you want to get it out of the way. I am going to brush it off to this side, and clip this out of the way as well.
A good way to protect your hair when doing something like this with creative coloring is to get foil. Now you don't have to go to the salon, and get the professional foil, you can use Reynolds foil that you have in your kitchen at home. I am going to place this underneath this panel to make sure that the rest of the hair doesn't get any color on it.
Okay, now, if you have darker hair what you are going to have to do first to get a really vibrant color, is you are going to have to go in with bleach to pre-lighten the hair before you put your creative color on it. When you -- you have dark hair and you are bleaching it, it's going to turn orange. So what you would have to do is then correct the orange coloring, that's what makes blue especially hard to do on dark hair, because when hair is orange, blue and orange sort of cancel each other out, so you get sort of a muddy color. Her hair is already pretty light so I am just going to apply the color straight to her hair. You can use all different colors, there is a lot of different lines that carry these funky colors. This one is Atomic Pink, but there is a whole line of different colors that you can use. I am going to go in and do her hair with a purple color.
When dyeing blonde hair a really bright color, just know that even temporary colors can become permanent colors in blonde hair. In darker hair, that's not the case, but definitely in blonde. So it will stay pretty vibrant for a long time. You want to take little teeny sections that you are going to do, and you want to start at the root of the hair and you want to really comb it all the way through, to make sure that the color is really, really getting in there, and you don't have any light spots left over. I tend to place my hand down and then really drag the color all the way through.
What you may want to try to do especially in blonde hair is just wash this part, you don't want to wash the whole head, because there is a possibility that this color could bleed on to the rest of the hair. Lean over the sink, and just wash this part that you are dyeing. So I washed the color out and I blew it dry and you can see it's this great vibrant purple piece right here. It's a cool way to do really fun funky color, and you can do a bunch of panels all over the head. You can even do really cool star, what we call star pattern, where you section the hair so it looks like a star on top of the head, just do that. There is all kinds of fun interesting ways to do creative coloring in the hair.
So, here is our purple panel. It looks great. What I am going to be showing you next is how to do the same effect, but with a hair extension, so that way you don't have to worry about dyeing your hair. You can actually do the same effect, but with using extensions to get that fun funky color.
