If you have a large Access database that you’ve been working with and you find as it gets larger, it’s getting slower, it’s getting harder to move around, then you really could use to compact that database. This is not something that Access does automatically unless you tell it to.
Now, if you want to do this one time only, go ahead and go up to your Office button, go to manage and then click on compact and repair database. And it’s going to automatically compact your database. Now, if you have a really large database it’s really not uncommon to get that done to a quarter of the original size.
Now, if you want to set it to compact automatically each time you close it you can do that as well. Go ahead and click on your Office button, click on Access options and it’s going to open your Access options window, click on current database, and then put a check mark where it says, compact on close, click OK.
Now, every time you close your database, it’s going to go ahead and it’s going to set your database to compact itself. Therefore, reducing your file size and here again they are going to ask you to close it and reopen it in order for that to take effect.
