Hi, I’m Les from Stress Less Audio Video and today, we’re going over how to set up and connect a high definition DVR box to a display. And right now, what we’re going to do is I already got the monitor hooked up. I’ve got everything in place and I want to go in and do some initial settings on the box to make sure that the box is match perfectly for the television we have on. So, first we’re going to do obviously is turn the monitor on, wait for the box to boot. You know it takes a couple of seconds for everything to sink together.
So now that we’ve got the box on and the monitor on, what you see now, I’m on in HD channel but it doesn’t look that great right now. I’ve got big bars on the top and the bottom because this box is probably not set up right. So the first thing we’re going to do is make sure that all our settings are proper and to do that we’re going to go into the menu and we’re going to go down to the settings.
Depending on what box you’re using, I’m using a Fios Motorola Box right now. Depending on the box you’re using and what company you’re with. It could be on couple of different spots but generally, it's somewhere within the menu structure and you go down to find settings and the first thing we want to do is go down the video settings.
Over here, as you can see it is 480i that’s not even a high definition. So as you can see it's a 480i, 4:3. There’s a 480p which is progressive scan and that’s also 4:3 but we don’t want that. We also have 720p, 16:9 and 1080i, 16:9
Now, looking in the manual I know that this monitor is actually a 720 p monitor so we’re going to want to switch this and 16:9 is actually the aspect ratio. So it's 16 across for every 9 down. So that’s basically what 16:9 means. So we’re going to go ahead and switch that. it’s just going to test a couple of things. It’s going to change every set. So we say, “Continue”. We’re going to wait and then now you can see we’re going to hit “yes” because that’s what we want and that’s going to switch the 720p. And even though we have the video behind, you can see it's actually filling the screen now.
Some channels probably still won’t fill the screening but that’s just a preference of that actual channel being displayed. So we’re going to come over down here. This is a video image. I usually like to set this to show video on window because as you can see it puts my full video over there.
So when I’m in my menu and my guide, I can still see what’s going on over there. Alright, so we’re going to do that and next thing we want to do is actually go up here to audio and make sure that the audio is set properly. So right now, it's in mono. What we want to do is put in a stereo which is going to utilize the left and the right speaker of your setting individual signals above. So we’re going to set that to stereo, set top volume.
This basically is to how much audio is coming out of the actual box since the television actually has audio speakers and it's on separate volume. We don’t want this too high. We want it around middle. I usually put it somewhere around half way. In that way, when you’re raising and decreasing the volume, you have some head room.
Those are the two major things you want to do in there, double check, see if there’s anything else we need to do. These things really don’t matter. This front display is basically on the front of the box. It can either show the number of the channel you’re on or it can show the time. I think the time is going to use this. Some people like it and that’s pretty much their own decision. That’s pretty much it for our settings.
So after, we’re done with all these and we’ve set up all of these things. What we want to do is actually press exit or you can just keep the left scrolling and once you hit exit, you should get a picture of that looks a lot better than when it did before. So, we’re pretty much done with the initial set up of the box. We’ll do some more tricks as we go through and we’re pretty much done with this right now though.
So what we’ll get into next is how to set up the parental patrols. So you can’t just sneak down stairs and watch HBO or some other channel when you don’t want to. We’ll be right back.
