Hi. I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. I’ve received a lot of request from people telling me that they have plumbing problems in their bathroom that they have a smell coming from their shower drain, but they say that the drain is draining fine and that there is no water problems showing through the ceiling downstairs. Usually if that’s the case, it’s another issue other than a plumbing problem. Usually, it’s a cleaning problem. I’ll show you how to take care of that.
Pretty much, no matter how much you clean this floor and keep this clean, there is one area that you’ll never be able to clean and just having water run over it isn’t going to be enough. That’s inside your drain trap between here and the top of the water that’s down in your trap. What you need to do is very carefully take out the two screws that are holding the drain cover on. Be very careful that you don’t loose them so that you don’t have to go and find a replacement for them. Set them aside where they won’t be knocked down into the drain. As you can see, it’s really easy to see once that cover is off, exactly where that odor is coming from. Here is the way that I found to take care of that.
What I would like to do is I like to take a paint roller, just a standard sized paint roller, because as you can see in there, there are little grooves and edges. It would be very difficult to get to. This stuff on top is pretty obvious, I mean, on the backside of the drain and that can be cleaned up easily, it’s the stuff inside down to the trap of the water. So what I do is I take a bucket of hot water with my favorite cleaning product, I take my paint roller sleeve or my roller cover, get it wet inside that mixture of soapy product simply working back and forth, slide it down into the hole. It should just about go down until it reaches the water in the trap. Just keep working it back and forth, bring it back up. As you can see, by looking down in the hole, it’s already getting cleaner already. Repeat the process half a dozen times until you’re pretty happy with the results. As you can see, we’re just a couple of minutes cleaning. All that grime is gone. We’re ready to put the—this is the bottom of the cover. There is the top. We’re ready to put the cover back on and hopefully it would be smell free in here for quite a while.
So there you. Hopefully, you appreciated this tip, then it will come useful to you and you won’t have that smell problem in your shower anymore.
