Rename an improper fraction as a mix number or decimal
So in this first problem, we need to rename 17/8 as a mixed number. To rename an improper fraction which is 17/8 as a mix number, we need to divide the numerator by the denominator. So then when we do that the quotient will then become your whole number, the remainder becomes the numerator and then your divisor becomes your denominator.
All right, so let’s go ahead and divide our numerator by our denominator, so we’re going to divide 17/8, so we’re going to take 8/17, so 8/17 is 2, 8 goes into 17 two times which is 16 and I get one left over, so the one left over is our remainder, the two is our quotient and the divisor is 8. So the quotient is 2, your remainder is one and your divisor is eight. So our mix number will equal the quotient, the remainder and then your remainder over your divisor. So if we go ahead and plug it in, our mix number will equal our quotient we said is two and then the remainder is one over our divisor which is 8. So our mix number is then 2 1/8. So 17/8 is equal to 2 1/8.
Let’s take a look at the second problem. Rename 4 2/5 as a decimal. To rename a mix number as a decimal we need to follow these steps, our first step is to divide the numerator of the fraction part by the denominator. So we’re going to divide the numerator of the fraction part by the denominator. So if we look at our fraction part, it’s 2/5, so the numerator then is 2 ÷ 5.
So if I take 5÷2, five can’t go into two, but it can into 20, so let me put my decimal point there and five goes into 20 four times which gives me 20 and then zero. So we have .4. Now we’re going to add the whole number to the decimal, so our second step is to add the whole number to the decimal.
So if we add our whole number which is 4 2/5 would be equal to 4 + 2/5 and we know that we have the four and our 2/5 written in decimal is .4, so we’re going to add our whole number to that decimal which we get 4.4. So 4 2/5 written as a decimal will be 4.4.
Things to keep in mind, to rename an improper fraction as a mix number we divide the numerator by the denominator. We write the quotient as the whole number, the remainder as the numerator and the divisor as the denominator. To rename a mix number as a decimal, we first divide the numerator by the denominator to find the decimal equivalent of the fraction part, then we add the whole number to the decimal to get the decimal equivalent of our mix number. So we add the whole number to the decimal to get our decimal equivalent of our mix number.
