Alright, this time we’re going to convert RPMs to DEB files. Now RPMs are red hot practice managers or the files of it, and we want to convert it to DEB in files which is what we use on Ubuntus the Mint and all that you know the DEB files, so that’s what we’re going to do.
Now, mainly we do this because some developers, they only do for red hot stuff and they don’t want to waste time you know making it for DEBs also, so we have to convert it to make it work on our Ubuntu systems or Mint systems so that‘s what were’ gong to do.
Now, the first thing you have to do is get this package in here your Synaptic. First thing you need is alien and what it does is just convert RPM to other packages like I said here you know, and you probably also want to fake root because most people they don’t want to use root to convert files like this so the fake root will give you a root new environment but not necessarily to put you in any danger because they always say, “don’t run as root or something like that” so that’s what we’re going to do.
So, what you’re doing to do is get the RPM files that you want to convert okay, so I have a file here. Now make sure it’s the same architecture, if you have a 64-bit Ubuntus then get the 64-bit RPMs okay because I know some newbies they’ll think that you can convert 32-bit to 64-bit or 64 to 32 which does not work that way okay -- -- there’s no way that way, so make sure you have the same architecture okay. You have 64-bit use 64 packages that’s it so that’s that.
Now, all you have to do is use the terminal here. Now there’s a few ways to do this sometimes you can just put an alien right and drag the package in here and it works, but sometimes it won’t it will tell you to do this okay. So just press enter here. Now it tells me to run as root or fake root right here alright, and if you don’t want to run as root because you want to be safe or whatever because there’s a lot of people that’s paranoid you can use fake root okay.
So we put the fake root alien space and you drag that thing in here okay press enter and it still convert it and you see you have the DEB files here, and where’s this going to go is it’s going to your home folder and you have your DEB files here and you double click on it you have the package installer like you normally do okay, and it says that, “converted from a RPM package by alien, so that’s that.
Now, sometimes you don’t have to use the sudo you know alien instead of fake root and it’s still the same way you drag it in alright and hit enter and it will tell you to type your password this time because this is the real root this time so the sudo, but the fake root you don’t have to type in your password you know. And that’s the few ways that you can do this. So that’s that and you still get your package in here and that’s that, that’s it.
So that’s alien and what it does is just converts RPM to other packages like DEDs that’s it.
