Lora: Hi, Dick.
Dick: Good morning.
Lora: What are you up to?
Dick: Well it's like a busy day ahead and now on our meal, it is going to stick to my ribs, so I am making a pot of porridge.
Lora: I don't like porridge.
Dick: Now well that's okay. You have never tried mine before. So leave a little bit of opening for them and the reason that I like porridge is because, first I really enjoy the taste of it but aside from that it gives me real energy to work on, no matter what I am doing, whether I am paddling, climbing a mountain, going hunting, what have you, it works and like people who come in the summer time find that out too.
Lora: So what do you put in this magic porridge of yours?
Dick: Well, come on with me and I will show you.
Lora: Okay.
Dick: First ingredient is going to be boiled water. So as soon as it goes on the fire, it's going to begin cooking immediately. Little touch of salt in there, just for flavor. Now, I am going to start with seven grain. This includes a number of different grains, its flax, its cracked wheat, it's a little bit of rolled oats and a number of different things. So we want a certain proportion of that. The water ratio there is about two to one and next what I am going to put in is one of my very favorite grains. This is Quinoa. Now Quinoa comes from South America. It was grown by the Mayans. It was the staple of their diet. It has the highest protein content of any grain in the world. So we want a fair bit of that in there and then we want to top that up with rolled oats. There is a bit of Quinoa mixed in here but it's principally rolled oats. That is for fat content, for flavor and for creaminess. Now, to add to the variety of the flavor, a little bit of raisins and to go with that a mixture of some nuts. We stir that all together and on to fire with it. You know Lora, that porridge is done.
Lora: Good.
Dick: And I am ready for it.
Lora: Okay, there is a lot of stuff in there, Dick.
Dick: There are lots of good things in there and I am going to serve you some.
Lora: Okay. It's quite thick.
Dick: Quite thick. You can see all the little goodies floating around in there. Now, in addition to that
Lora: Some raisins.
Dick: Raisins, right.
Lora: Thank you.
Dick: We have dried fruit.
Lora: Oh this looks very good actually.
Dick: Yeah it is, very tasty and then we have got lots of big walnuts and other goodies in there too including Craisins.
Lora: Cranberries.
Dick: Right, yeah dried cranberries.
Lora: Oh, it's lovely.
Dick: Very nice, okay. A spoon.
Lora: Thank you and mix it all up. This is the porridge that I will like.
Dick: This stuff is going to sustain you from the next five to six hours too. It will not let you down as it is so nutritious.
Lora: It's not bad actually.
Dick: Alright, I think I am going to have a bowl.
