Like thousands of Canadians, Stuart Pollon was living with chronic delibitating pain but today he is enjoying a new leaf on life thanks to neurostimulation therapy.
Stuart Pollon: Prior to the implant I was dependent upon crouches for mobility. I experience constant pain, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite. The implant changed all that.
Sherri Dmyterko : Recently a Canadian-led International Study called the Process Study, the largest of it's kind, looked at the effects of neurostimulation therapy to control a severe chronic leg and back pain. The study found that neurostimulation therapy plus conventional medical management provided patients with significantly greater pain relief and quality of life than conventional medical management alone. Doctor Krishna Kumar was the lead investigator for process.
Dr. Krishna Kumar: At one many given time or one million Canadians suffer from Chronic pain, neurostimulation had been shown to improve their quality of life. The study found that the patient who were the neurostimulation group they did extremely well had much better than the people who are in the conventional medical treatment only.
Sherri Dmyterko: The Medtronic Neurostimulator device is about the size of a pocket watch and it's implanted under the skin helping to block pain signals in the body.
Dr. Krishna Kumar: The equipment I needed for a neurostimulation has two parts there is a electrode which is implanted on the surface of the spinal cord and there is a battery which supplies current to it. When the battery is turned on it dampens or blocks the pain impulses travailing up the spinal cord to the brain thus giving relief from pain. The results of the process study are important, as this will go a long way to convince the physicians who treat chronic pain patients to consider neurostimulation early in the course of the treatment whenever the conventional medical treatment does not give satisfactory pain relief.
Stuart Pollon: Thanks to doctor Kumar and neurostimulation; I actually have a life. Prior to the implant, prior to being introduced to doctor Kumar, I didn't really feel that I have did have life, I hadn't existence -- when you are on constant pain 24 hours a day; you don't really look forward to things. you have to think more over the things you are missing out. I don't experience that any more I look forward to my career have a great -- married to a great woman, I have a great family; those are the things I look forward to. And large part thanks to neurostimulation and doctor Kumar.
