Hi, I am Tim Carter from askthebuilder.com. Look at this horrible moss on my garage roof. It is gross, it is horrible and you know what, it can cause the shingles to fail prematurely but I want to show you something you are not going to believe. Come with me.
Okay I have walked just 10 to 12 feet away and look at the shingles on this part of the garage roof. There is no moss, there are no algae. They look really, really pretty good for being 20 years old. Now why is it that these are clean and those are not? I am telling you right now it is not because I took the moss and algae off. Let me show you how Mother Nature did it for free.
Here is a copper copula that is right on top of my roof. It is this little itty bitty roof and every time it rains, a little bit of this copper washes off the roof and goes down across the shingles. And that copper creates a poison so the moss and algae would not grow. It is much like weed killer that you might put on your lawn.
So if you do not want moss and algae to grow on your roof you can put copper upon it, you have got two choices. Put copper strips underneath the cap shingles at the top of your roof only with about two inches or three inches of copper exposed or if you are buying a new roof or building a new home, you can actually buy shingles that have copper that is incorporated into those colored granules. It is that simple.
