Brad: I'm Brad from Boston. I'm father of a 20 year old son. He won't work, stays in his room all day. I've tried talking to him. What can I do?
Sharon Hirsch: Brad, it sounds like your son may have a major depression. He is not going out. It sounds like he has lost interest in his usual activities and he is isolating himself to the point that he is really non-functional.
There are lot of other reasons people stay in their room. There's anxiety disorders, there's a lot of other things. I am assuming that he is not so physically ill, that he can't get out. I would urge you to get him treatment right away, he is really not functioning, and he is seriously ill.
You can get treatment from a Psychiatrist, from another mental health worker. If you can't get him out, you need to take him to the emergency room, and most all states, you can have the police come help you with that if he just refuses to go. But, I hope that he'll go with you willingly because he really does need treatment.
