How to Count Money and Make Change
In this lesson, let’s learn how to count money and how do we make change. We’ll try two problems. The first one wants us to write the money amount, it wants us to count money. Let’s do this. Okay. What do we have? We’ve got a $5 bill. So I’m going to basically have to count here.
So $5 bill, I’ve only got one of these. So what’s the value of that? That’s five bucks or $5. Then, I’ve got a $1 bill and there’s only one of those. One of the $1 bills means that the total value, $5 is what I had and then I added a dollar to it so the total value is $6. I’ve got $6 so far. Then I scroll down, I got a quarter, so this is a quarter dollar. So when I add a quarter dollar to $6 which is what I had, I have $6.25. What more do I have?
Well, I’ve got a dime. This is a dime or $0.10. $0.10 when added to $6.25 gives me $6.35. Keep going, I’ve got three pennies. So this is pennies or $0.01 and I’ve got three of these. I had one of these and one of these. So $0.03 is what I’m adding to this so this becomes $6.38. I had $6.35 before, I added three pennies to it so $6.38. That’s the total that we were looking for. $6.38.
Now that we know how to count money, let’s do problem. Problem two says that Lenny wants to buy a present for his brother. He decides to buy a CD for $7.89. He gives the cashier a $10 bill. How much change would he receive?
So the CD costs $7.89. He gave the cashier $10, what’s the difference. How much change should he get?
Well let’s figure out. If I wanted to start with $7.89 and I wanted to get to $10, how would I do that? Well, what’s the first thing that I would do? I would add $0.01. If I add $0.01 which is a penny which is what I added, what would I get? I would get $7.90. So now, if I had $7.90 and I added a dime to it which is $0.10, what would I get? $7.90 + $0.10 gives me $8. So, so far, I’ve added a penny and a dime and I’ve gotten to $8. From here, if I wanted to reach $10, what I would do is start with $8 and add $2 or two of $1 bills. What would that give me? If I added $2 to $8, it would give me $10 which is where I wanted to be.
So let’s total all that we have to add to get from $7.89 to $10. We had to add one penny, we added one dime and we added $2 bills. Okay, what does this mean? Two dollar bills is $2 and then a dime is $.10 and a penny is $0.01. So I added $2, $0.10 and $0.01 or $2.11 which is the change he should have received if he gave the cashier a $10 bill.
This is an easy way to look at how much change we should get. You just simply take the amount and we keep adding currency to it. So we know that penny is a currency, we know we’ve got dimes, we know we’ve got quarters and dollars, etc. We keep adding them until we get to $10. In this case, we added $2.11 which is the change that Lenny should have received.
