OK. I knew that when we work with high school players that, the second thing you have to we work on how grip the stick. We always try to teach them how to cradle. What do you do with youth as far as teaching them how to cradle?
Diane: Well, I think teaching youth how to cradle is probably one of the hardest thing to teach. It's very confusing with top and bottom hand. So we start with really simple concepts.
So the first thing we are going to do, they have their sticks in hands we are going to have them put their stick down. We are going to learn how to cradle without a stick in our hand. And we are going to start with just learning the action of the bottom hand. So all you girls take except -- I am at your left, right? Your right hand. Okay, everybody here is lined here. Okay, so your left hand is on the bottom. Anna put your left hand out like this sweet girl. We go, that's this one. There you go, okay. And you are going to bend it so that it's even to the floor parallel, there you go. Keep your elbow in at your hip, and you all you are going to do is open and close the gate. Can you do that, open and close the gate? Perfect!
That's the action when you are cradling of your bottom hand. Laura can you put your elbow in a little closer and just open and close the gate. Everybody, show me that. Excellent! Good job!
Now if you can pick up your stick, I don't want you to worry about your top hand, except the kind you steady your stick. All I want you to do is open and close your gate with your stick in your hand. Anna put your hand at the top, sweetheart! Everybody look at their bottom hand. Are they actually opening and closing their gate? Let's see Kally, Anna isn't. Put your elbow at a side. It's a really hard concept guys. So hang in their. Good Sorana is opening and closing the gate. That's all I want you to focus on, exactly without the stick. Remember, opening and closing. So I go round behind all the players and I help them because it's a weird feel, opening and closing that gate.
Go ahead and do it with your arm again because I want you to get this feel, open and close the gate. There we go, open, close, open, close. Grab your sticks again. Good job! I want to see you guys do it again. Get your hand at the top just keeping it steady. The top hand doesn't do a whole lot when you are cradling. Open and close your gate. Just focus on your lower hand. Now you got it little Laura prefect. There you go. Good!
Now we have a special thing that we do with youth. We would like to have them have fun. So we help them to cradle their beanie babies. And we have to have them put them to sleep. So everybody has picked up her beanie baby and it has little carry bag here. Go ahead and put it in your stick. The first thing that you want to do guys, is not hold your stick up like this because the beanie baby will fall. So just put a little bit of an angle on it. So your beanie baby won't fall out and then rock by your baby a sleep. Sorana killed hers. There you go, Laura, very nice! Great Kally! Rock that baby to sleep. That gives them tgat good cradling notion when they have to rock their babies to sleep. And try to work on that, opening and closing your gates still, think about your bottom hands. There we go. Oh! There we go. Good job! Good girls!
So that gives if you remember Kally, don't move your body. So you just walk around behind them. Remember to keep that little bit of an angle. That's what you are going to need when you have the ball in there, and then close. Good!
Remember steps and try to cradle while you are walking. She got the movement. Good! Good Anna! So now we are going it with a ball on the stick. Go ahead with opening and closing the gate. Good Laura! I like that form. Good Sorana! Keep that elbow in at the side. Good! Alright.
More remember it's not the body, it's the bottom hand opening and closing. Again, just walking around behind them, cradling it like it's a baby. Good Kally! Everybody think about their bottom arm. It takes a lot of hard work to work with that. Good! Alright, now take a couple of steps with your pause? Great girls, good!
