Ilysa Bierer: These are some badges that we made and when we purchase these badges, we were unsure whether or not they would fire because on the inside, there is like coated wire and we found out they did not fire.
By making worn, I will actually—what happen is I guess the coating on the wire melted so it didn’t allow to retract anymore because this badge will loose retract. And they are really nice if you work in an office and you have to wear a badge, why not make something fun and cool. This one here, these are just cane slices and I’ve sliced off one cane and then I slice out a smaller cane and then a smaller so I did like a graduated step in with three different canes and you can get a really neat look
Kira Slye: And you bake it first.
Ilysa Bierer: Right.
Kira Slye: All everything on these badge holders is this baked and then glued on.
Ilysa Bierer: Right. So this one, I textured a sheet of silver and then I made a little heart and added a cane. And these really neat tiny lines are just done with one of these tracing wheels. And that’s how easy to do it. And then I use a little knitting needle to poke the rest and just glued it right on to the badge.
And this one, Kira made one of her little faces and this was molded and I added a little powdered pigments on there, and then I glued it right on.
So basically with this technique, you’re going to need to make your piece first, fire it, and then glue it on because you can’t put this in the oven like we said because there are coated wire and they do melt. So make sure to bake your piece first and then glue it on.
Kira Slye: So the object of this lesson is before you put something unknown in the oven and you know, if we had made some rally fancy thing and it was stuck on here and then we put it on the oven and baked it and took it out, it would have been a non-functional piece of art that maybe we would have had to hang on the wall.
Ilysa Bierer: Right, so there are some things you can stick in the oven and there are some that you can’t and be a little weary on anything that is coated with plastic because that is what this wire its got a little, plastic coating and who knows what the mechanism inside is made out of too. So that can be coated with some kind of plastic as well which would cause not to work. So like I said, make your piece, fire your piece and then glue it on, and you are ready to go. And you got something really cool badge holders.
Kira Slye: And that glue wasn’t fancy either. At least we got this Elmer’s gel school glue and it is pretty strong. And that is just what we use to glue on the pieces.
Ilysa Bierer: Exactly. So have fun with it. Try a variety of techniques. You can use any techniques that you want on this. You just have fun and play with it.
Kira Slye: Thanks for joining and come back next week.
Ilysa Bierer: Yeah, thanks for joining us.
