Welcome to another Photoshop tutorial brought to you by photoshoptalent.com. I will be answering another one, another user suggestion right now and this suggestion came from Mina16 and she asks, hey I have been using Photoshop at my school, for computer work, on year book etc. Do you know how to make everything black and white around them like say they are in the field of flowers? That is all black and white, but they are in color.
Yes I do, I will going to answer that question right no, I will going to use two examples. The first example we’re going to do a picture on the left and I am going to exclude everything except the flowers. So, basically all the green will be black and white and all the flowers, the yellow flower, the red flower, the pink flower, they will all be in color. On the next example, which is the one on the right, I will exclude only one color of flower. So, as you can see there are red flowers and there are yellow flowers. I will going to show only the red in the flowers and everything else, the yellow and the white and the green will be black and white.
So, let us get started. Now, again like I have said in many of my tutorials there are different ways of going about, everything. But, I am going to show you the way that I think is the fastest and the most efficient. So basically in this one, we want to get rid of everything that is green, basically everything that is not the flowers. So, the first thing that I like to do is I like to emphasize the green, it makes it easier to select. So, I am going up to the top, I will go to click up on image, adjustments and then hue and saturation. Now, the hue and saturation window is up, I am going to make sure to click on greens from the edit drop down box. So basically, these three sliders will focus only on the green colors.
Now, I am going to take the saturation and I am going to slide to the right which increases the saturation, which basically increases the vibrancy of the green colors. As you can see, it is a little bit more vibrant .Put it somewhere around there and that is the probably the only color I want to focus on right now and the only slider. I will go to click ok, and now the greens are lot more vibrant, as you can see, this is before and this is after, it will make it easier to select.
Now, for the selection process, we are going up to the top and click on select and then go down to color range and click on that. There are color range dialog box has appeared. Now few basics, we will going to make sure selection preview is set to black map. This will able to allow us to see exactly what is going on. A select should be on sampled colors. If you select green, even though we want to select the green, it’s not that accurate. So, will be going to sampled colors and we are going to pick our color our selves. So, we are going to click on the part that is probably the most common green and if you click on hold on your mouse down and drag around. You can probably see which color you want. Once you have a, you know the most common green. We can go up to the fussiness slider and again I have explained another tutorial, but I will do it again. Basically what you want to do is slide your slider either left or right and have your colored selection all in black. So, if you slide you will notice that the flowers here and here either get black or lighter. Basically we want them as black as possible, because that will be the selection that will not change. So slide this around until you have a descent selection and once you think you have a descent selection. I am going to click ok and now you will notice three is all these marching ants around the place.
Basically, all the green or most of the green is selected right now. Once that is done, you can go up to the top and click on image, adjustments and then de-saturate. De-saturate is basically a fancy word for black and white and click on that. Now, as you can see, for the most part, all the green has turn black and white. Now it is not a hundred percent accurate but what we can do, we can undo. Go back before we did color range, go back up to select and color range and then increase the fussiness, which will in turn select more of the greens and then click ok and again go to image, adjustments, de-saturate and there we go. So, you can notice that more of the greens have been selected and more of the greens have been turned black and white.
One other option that you may consider is using what is called the sponge tool. You can find the sponge tool over the left on your tool bar and you may see the dodge tool or the burn tool. Again, hold down your mouse button and click on sponge tool and then zoom up to the top here make sure that its mode, its set to de-saturate. Basically right now, you have a paint brush and everything you paint will in turn, turn black and white. So, you can see the flower down here, if we start painting it. It will turn black and white, so there you go. So, you can around your image and paint out the rest of the greens or reds or whatever that may not have turned perfectly black and white using that tool.
So, we are going to move on to our second example, here we go. So, here we have an image with multiple colors of flowers, as well of some green, but let us say we want only the red flowers to be shown. This is what we do, it is the same method. Now, the vibrancy of the red are pretty good, so we are not be going to be bothered with that. So, using the same method we are going up to select, color range and this time instead of selecting the greens. We are going to click on red and you will notice that the reds are pre-selected already. So, just adjust the fussiness a little bit more and once you are happy with that result, click okay and again go to image, adjustments. Oh no! One more thing sorry, because the reds are selected right now, we want to invert the selection. So, go up to the top and go to select inverse. I will pick the opposite of what we had, so instead of selecting the red flowers. Now it selects everything except the red flowers.
Now, we can get to image adjustments, de-saturate and there we go. We can do select and now we have only the red selected and everything else is black and white. Now if you want to, you can go back and make the selection a little bit better if you are really picky, but that is basically how it would be done. And, that is about it for this tutorial.
